Between Daly City and Menlo Park, the practice location can decide whether a soccer offer works for the family. San Mateo's AYSO Region 36, Foster City's PYSC, Burlingame SC and ALBION's San Mateo programs offer different starting points. Compare actual team placement, the fee period and travel rather than assuming a single Peninsula pathway.
How Peninsula youth soccer works
Peninsula soccer includes local recreation, introductory programs, competitive clubs and school teams. They are choices, not a required age ladder.
AYSO and local recreation. Region 36 is a San Mateo option. Other cities need their own locator result and registration. Current San Mateo PAL eligibility and soccer terms are not established here.
Academy and competitive offers. PYSC, Burlingame SC and ALBION San Mateo are named choices. A specific team offer determines entry, training and competition.
NorCal divisions. The offered team's age group and current division identify its competition. A club-wide label does not establish every team's level.
National 1. For 2026–27, N1 replaces NorCal NPL and is team-based. ECNL is club-based; any N1-to-ECNL-RL wildcard is conditional. State Cup is a separate cup competition. PYSC's older NPL wording does not establish current N1 rosters.
National competitions. MLS NEXT, ECNL, EA and DPL have separate team and membership rules. Burlingame and ALBION program descriptions do not establish every current age-group team's league.
School soccer. Current WCAL, WBAL, PAL and CCS schedules govern school participation. Club play is separate, with no verified fixed championship month or required feeder route.
Camps, showcases and college. These are additional choices, not compulsory rungs. No competition name or summer event guarantees a college place.
Soccer abbreviations
Before any program comparison makes sense, the acronyms have to land.
- AYSO: American Youth Soccer Organization; Region 36 is San Mateo, with the locator needed elsewhere.
- NorCal Premier / N1: regional organizer and its 2026–27 team-based National 1 competition.
- MLS NEXT: Academy uses August-to-July age formation; Allstate Homegrown remains January-to-December.
- ECNL / ECNL-RL: Elite Clubs National League and its distinct regional-league competition.
- EA / DPL: Elite Academy and Development Player League, separate competitions.
- CCS / PAL / WCAL / WBAL: CIF Central Coast Section, Peninsula Athletic League, West Catholic Athletic League and West Bay Athletic League for school sport.
- SMPAL: San Mateo Police Activities League, distinct from the school-sport PAL.
- NCAA: National Collegiate Athletic Association.
AYSO and local recreation
San Mateo AYSO Region 36 is one recreational option. It is not a Peninsula-wide region. The AYSO locator identifies the local program by address; its current registration governs ages and season.
AYSO's Everyone Plays rule guarantees at least half a game. It does not guarantee exactly equal minutes. Region-specific schedules, fees, uniform inclusions and assistance terms are not established here.
San Mateo PAL is another program lead. Current soccer registration, membership rules, administration and fees are not verified, so it is not described as an active low-cost competitive offer.
Competitive clubs
PYSC, Burlingame SC and ALBION San Mateo are competitive-program choices. PAL and Belmont United require current offer information before a team comparison.
PYSC is Foster City-based and describes professional coaching and NorCal teams. Current age-group placements need a team-specific offer; the older NPL-to-Copper description is not a 2026–27 roster.
Burlingame SC has introductory and competitive programs. Its approximate fee page separates seasonal fees from MLS NEXT/ECNL-RL fall-plus-spring estimates. Exact current age-group league placement still depends on the official team roster.
ALBION San Mateo has a local program page and Juniors registration. Its 2026–27 Juniors sessions cost $125 for ages 3–4 or $165 for ages 5+. Those introductory prices do not establish competitive EA/DPL tuition or every team's current league.
Belmont United is a directory lead. Current registration, team roster, practice site and fee are unconfirmed.
School soccer on the Peninsula
The school map uses WCAL, WBAL, PAL and CCS information. Current memberships and divisions need the actual season's school/league listing.
WCAL is a school league to consult for current Catholic-school soccer schedules. A league reputation is not a current team ranking.
WBAL provides private-school league information. Menlo School, Sacred Heart Prep and other schools need current season listings; old division or commitment claims are not current status.
PAL supplies San Mateo County public-school league information. Current divisions should not be inferred from school size or an old Bay list.
School and club soccer are separate opportunities. No division, league or showcase is an established universal requirement for college recruitment.
Choosing a program
The choice is the offered team, coach, training site, fee period and what your child wants to play.
- First season: compare nearby recreational or introductory registration.
- More soccer: compare a clinic or team offer without a fixed switching age.
- Competitive selection: use the offered team's age matrix, role and schedule.
- Different challenge: compare another team/division rather than an automatic league ladder.
- College interest: compare playing experience, academics and specific programs' roster needs.
College participation
NCAA's 2024–25 soccer estimates compare high-school and NCAA participation. They are approximate ratios and exclude club-only high-school athletes.
- Boys: 5.9% across NCAA divisions; 1.4% in Division I.
- Girls: 7.9% across NCAA divisions; 2.8% in Division I.
Those participation ratios are not scholarship or recruiting odds. Aid and roster decisions depend on the college; no youth league or age-specific sequence guarantees an offer.
